A Lifeline for At-Risk Equines

Many of the horses that come to us have been subjected to horrific conditions—some are starved, injured, or left to fend for themselves after their owners can no longer care for them. Others have been rescued from kill pens, where horses are auctioned off and often shipped to slaughterhouses. Some arrive after being seized by law enforcement due to severe neglect and cruelty cases.

These horses often suffer from malnutrition, untreated medical conditions, and deep psychological trauma from years of mistreatment. Without intervention, many would face certain death. That’s where CRR steps in—to heal, rehabilitate, and restore their dignity.

A Comprehensive Rehabilitation Approach

Healing an abused horse is not just about physical recovery; it’s about restoring trust and rebuilding confidence in humans. Each equine that comes into our care receives an individualized rehabilitation plan tailored to their specific needs.

🔹 Emergency Rescue & Intake: Our team works with local authorities, animal control, and concerned citizens to identify and rescue horses in distress. Each new arrival undergoes a thorough veterinary evaluation to assess their medical condition and determine the best course of treatment.

🔹 Veterinary & Medical Care: Horses receive essential medical care, including wound treatment, parasite control, dental work, hoof care, and vaccinations. Severely malnourished horses follow a carefully designed refeeding program to regain weight safely.

🔹 Nutritional Support: Many of our rescues arrive emaciated and weak from prolonged starvation. We provide customized feeding plans that include high-quality hay, specialized grain, supplements, and constant monitoring to ensure healthy weight gain and digestion.

🔹 Rehabilitation Training & Socialization: Horses that have suffered abuse often develop deep-seated fear and behavioral issues. Our experienced trainers work patiently and gently with each horse to help them regain confidence and overcome trauma. They receive groundwork training, positive reinforcement, and socialization with other horses to prepare them for future adoption or therapy work.

🔹 Sanctuary & Long-Term Care: Not every horse that comes to CRR can be rehomed. Some have medical conditions, advanced age, or behavioral challenges that prevent adoption. These horses find a permanent home at Crossroads Rescue Ranch, where they can live out their days peacefully, surrounded by care and love.

🔹 Forever Home Placements: For horses ready to move on, we conduct thorough adoption screenings to ensure they are placed in safe, experienced, and loving homes. We provide resources, follow-ups, and lifelong support to adopters to ensure a successful transition.

Horses as Healers

Many of our rescued horses go on to serve as therapy animals in our Women’s Healing Through Equine & Canine Therapy Program. These horses, once broken and discarded, become powerful healers—helping women who have suffered from abuse, trauma, or difficult pasts to rebuild their own confidence and trust.

Impact & Future Goals

🔹 To date, we have successfully rescued, rehabilitated, and rehomed numerous equines, saving them from suffering and placing them in loving homes.
🔹 Our goal for the future is to expand our facilities, increase our rescue capacity, and develop a full-scale equine therapy center where both horses and people can heal together.
🔹 We also plan to educate the public about equine welfare, responsible ownership, and the importance of rescue and rehabilitation programs.
